(More customer reviews)In the final instalment of the `Loss of Certainty' trilogy, the city of Jackson, Iowa, is under threat of flood as a consequence of unremitting rain combined with the winter snow melt. The threat of flood brings with it concerns about Jackson's financial future: the dog track under construction on an island in the Mississippi River is in jeopardy. The city officials also learn that the existing floodwall and levee systems in place around the city may fail with potentially devastating effect.
There are divisions within the city, and prejudices and grievances about events in the past which, if they continue to impact on the way people work together, will make it difficult to address the threat of flood. Additionally, not everyone agrees on either the threat posed by the possible flood or the best way to address it. While the civic leaders are arguing about the best way to proceed, the river continues to rise.

This novel chronicles the detailed preparations for the flood: the signs; the measurements and their different interpretations. Pulling all of this data together and making decisions are a cast of believably human characters most of whom appeared in earlier books in the trilogy. The politics of small town governance is a central theme in the trilogy, as is the issue of racial tension in a small community.
I enjoyed this novel, and admire the way in which Mr Jones has developed both the individual characters that populate the story as well as the community of Jackson itself. The use of short focussed chapters made it easy to follow the different characters and events as the story progressed.

In the third and final installment of The Loss of Certainty trilogy, T. P. Jones once again delves into America's heartland to portray the gritty drama of life in the Midwest. Constant rains on top of melting winter snow fuel fears of a record flood in Jackson, Iowa. Construction of the town's dog track on an island in the Mississippi River is jeopardized, threatening Jackson's financial future. Even more ominous, city officials learn that the existing floodwall and levee system might fail to protect the city itself.With little time to lose, the people of Jackson must set aside old grievances and long-held prejudices to work together. Tensions build while they debate whether to add to the system, and as they argue, the river continues to rise.
