But that is precisely what happens to Hermia and Lawrence, students at Radcliffe and Harvard respectively in the early sixties, on a cruise among several Italian islands. Lawrence has become a professor of architecture, failing to attain notoriety as a practitioner, and Hermia, an English major and former book editor, hasn't worked for years and lives a quiet existence on Cape Cod.
In keeping with his well educated characters, the author carries on a constant exploration of architects and styles, various literary works, and any amount of arcana concerning Europe and its history - and it can be distracting, except for of course the smart-set.
A substantial part of the book is devoted to examining the intervening years: the marriages, divorces, and children, giving substance to their second chance.
But what does a second chance represent? Was the original drifting apart a mistake? Have all the years that have passed clarified the answer to that question? Perhaps the choices are no easier many years later. That is exactly what Lawrence and Hermia must decide.
